New York

New York is the biggest city in the USA. About live 8,5 million people here, but full agglomeration has 24 million residents. New York is situated in north-eastern part of the US. City stands on Atlantic coast. Through the city flows the river Hudson. Most of the city is situated on islands Manhattan, Staten Island a Long Island. New York has five boroughs – Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island. Popular nickname is Big Apple.

History

First European settlement was founded by colonizers from Netherland in 1614. They bought the Manhattan Island for 60 guldens (Dutch currency) from native American. City get name New Amsterdam, however in 1664 the city captured by the British. Since this time the name of the city is New York.

Places

In New York are situated a lot of interesting places. Statue of Liberty was gift from France, because French army help to win of the American colonies in American War of Independence. The National September 11 Memorial stands on the place of World Trade Center. It is a memory of terrorist attack from 11th September 2001 when 2 192 civilians died. Guggenheim Museum is one of the most famous galleries of modern art with architecturally valued building. Times Square is “Crossroads of the World” with important buildings and lighting advertisement. Square get name from the building of New York Times what stand here. People can go for a walk and take a rest to Central Park. Park is situated in the middle of Manhattan island. Broadway is famous boulevard with a lot of popular theatres. New York is financial center “of the world” and Wall Street is home for the world’s two largest stock exchanges. Trinity Church is a historic parish church between skyscrapers. Empire State Building is skyscraper with 102 floors. Skyscraper stood as the world’s tallest building for 40 years (until 1971 when was opened World Trade Center). Chrysler Building was the family investment by Walter P. Chrysler. Both are typical kinds of buildings in Art Deco. One World Trade center is with the most tall building in the USA.

Washington, D.C.

Washington D.C. is capital city of the USA. City is situated not so far from eastern coast on river Potomac. Live just 700 000 inhabitants here, but whole agglomeration has together 5 million of citizens. Shortcut D. C. in name means “District of Columbia” – Columbia is old name for United states of America.

History

In 1790 choose George Washington (first American president) this place for construction of the future capital city. The Government moved here in 1800 after the completion of Capitol. During the British-American war city was damaged. Five days after American civil war (south vs. north) actor John Wilkes Booth killed Abraham Lincoln in Ford Theatre.

Places

Capitol is the home of the United States Congress. Capitol is built in a neoclassical style and has a white exterior. The White House is the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States. Washington Monument is 169 metres tall obelisk from marble. It stand in the National Mall. Nation Mall is 1 mile long park with museums on the sides. Smithsonian Institution opened here museums of Natural History, American History, Air and Space or African Art. Another institution what stand on National Mall is National Gallery of Art. National Mall connect Washington Monument with Capitol. Pentagon is headquarter for Ministry of Defence. It is the world’s largest office building  with 26 000 employees. Jefferson Memorial is neoclassicism building celebrates the third president of the USA. The Lincoln Memorial was built to honor Abraham Lincoln. It is a kind of antic style. The Arlington National Cemetery is a military cemetery with 400 000 graves. It was established in 1864 in the Civil War (south vs. north).
